Wisdom before the 'Yes'
A reflection on Proverbs 2:6 and the quiet guidance of God
Scripture
Proverbs 2:6 — “For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.”
Poem
Wisdom, Lord
Should I write, because I can?
All things are possible — but are they necessary?
Should I sing, because I have a gift?
A song in the wrong hands can imprison the songbird,
turning melody into a din.
Should I speak, because an orator’s flame burns within me?
Or would my words uncover my hiding place,
placing me in the line of fire?
Should I give, because I long to share?
Or does zeal untapped drain the reservoir,
leaving only a desert behind?
Wisdom, Lord —
the key to knowledge and understanding.
Guidance, Lord —
to walk in Your will.
Reflection
I wrote this poem in November while quietly asking God whether I should publish my poetry at all.
The questions in it were real.
Should I write simply because I can?
Should I speak because words come easily?
Should I share words written in private moments over many years?
Ability alone is not wisdom.
Gifts are not given merely to be used, but to be guided.
So I prayed for wisdom.
Not long afterwards, the answer came gently and clearly
I got up… and said yes.
The journey since then has reminded me that wisdom is not simply knowledge or talent.
It is the quiet guidance that helps us walk carefully, speak thoughtfully,
and recognise the right moment to act.
God’s wisdom often does not shout.
It whispers.
The Spirit of God inspires.
It is the wise heart that pauses long enough to listen.
Selah – Pause and Consider
Take a quiet moment to reflect.
• Is there something in your life you are hesitating to say yes to?
• Have you asked God for wisdom before taking the next step?
• Where might the Spirit of God be nudging you gently forward?
Looking Ahead
Next week we will reflect on trials and perseverance.
Scripture reminds us that faith is not only shaped in moments of clarity and joy,
but also in seasons of testing. Trials often become the very place where
perseverance is formed and trust in God deepens.
Together we will consider how God works within life’s difficulties,
strengthening our faith and teaching us to endure with hope.
The Seasons of Life is now available: a collection of poems, Scripture, and gentle reflections for every season.
