The Secret Place and the Rock: Hidden, Established, and Lifted by Christ

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 27:5-6

“For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.

And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.”

INTRODUCTION

Do you ever feel like running away?

Overwhelmed by life’s challenges?

Fatigued, with a loss of vigour? Perhaps lethargy has taken hold.

You rightly discern that it is not just physical. There is an emotional drain and a spiritual low. The tank is not merely empty; it feels as though someone forgot to refill it.

You are not alone.

Everyone, at times in life, needs to take time to recharge.

The warning signs will alert us, but if ignored, the risk of collapse is real.

Do you know your warning signs?

At such times, the temptation can be to withdraw, to pull back from the noise and demands of life. Perhaps not forever, just long enough to catch your breath.

As I reflected on Psalm 27:5-6, I found myself considering God’s response to such seasons.

David speaks of being hidden in the secret of God’s tabernacle and being set upon a rock. At first glance, these seem like two very different ideas. Yet the more I pondered them, the more I realised they are deeply connected.

The secret place, according to Psalm 27, is a place to recharge in God’s presence, hidden for a season.

When the time is right, the believer, healed, strengthened and renewed, is set upon a rock in the presence of adversaries... but still abiding in the Secret Place... where God’s presence is.

The Tabernacle and Rock is in the same location.

The problem has not been removed, but you are now buoyant, ready and able; not in your own strength, but His.

You are visible on The Rock, but under His protection.

Have you noticed?

You are standing on The Rock, the firm foundation, Christ.

God’s Presence and Christ the Rock are inseparable.

You are hidden in Christ, in God

Colossians 3:3

The believer’s goal should always be His Presence and His Will.

When His Presence is the goal, the secret place ceases to be a transactional pit stop where we simply look for relief, and instead becomes the destination itself.

It completely reframes how we view our circumstances. Instead of asking,

“How do I get out of this?”

The heart pursuing His Will asks,

“Who am I becoming in this, and how is He being glorified?”

When His Presence is the ultimate prize, the shifting sand of the world loses its grip on us. As Psalm 27:4 beautifully anchors it:

“One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.”

It simplifies everything down to that “one thing.” When that is settled, alignment with His Will naturally follows, and the strength to stand on the Rock becomes effortless because it is entirely sustained by Him.

Your head is lifted up.

And...

You sing.

Reflection

The Rock Beneath You

The Rock beneath you provides unshakeable stability. You are not sinking in the mire of the problem anymore; you are standing over it.

The Lifting of the Head

The posture of shame, exhaustion and defeat is broken. He changes your perspective so that you are looking down at the storm from a place of victory, rather than looking up at it in fear.

The Song

This is the ultimate sign of a processed healing. You do not sing because the problem is gone; you sing because the problem has lost its power over you.

The joy becomes your defiance and your strength.

It is a beautiful reminder that the secret place prepares us for the public stand.

Poem

(Excerpts from two poems in The Seasons of Life)

Comfort Zone

“Come aside... Spend time in My Presence”

“Allow Me to be the lifter up of your head”

From Father’s Heart

“Your life is hidden in Me...”

“Trust in your Father’s love...”

“Come and let Me whisper peace to you...”

Selah : Pause and Consider

What are your warning signs that tell you it is time to rest and recharge?

- Are you trying to escape your circumstances, or is God inviting you into His presence?

- How have you experienced Christ as both your hiding place and your Rock?

Closing Thought

When His Presence is the destination, the Secret Place is no longer a waiting room for something better. It is the place we most need to be.

When His Will is the destination, obedience becomes success, regardless of the visible result.

It is foolhardy to wait for crises to drive us to the Secret Place.

Take time.

Set dates.

Abide in the Tabernacle.

For the one who dwells in His presence is strengthened by His grace, established upon His Rock, and able to sing even in the presence of adversity.

He hides.

He establishes.

He lifts.

Therefore...

I will sing.
